Nagpur: A sudden and rapid surge in chikungunya and dengue cases has prompted health officials to declare a public health emergency in the city. With daily hospitalizations reaching alarming levels, Nagpur has reported a staggering 54 new chikungunya cases and 15 dengue cases in the first eight days of August, sparking concerns among residents and health authorities.
The chikungunya outbreak has shown a significant increase, with a test positivity rate exceeding 20%, indicating a high rate of infection. Daily case counts are also escalating rapidly, with 10 new cases reported on both August 7 and 8, putting a strain on the city’s healthcare infrastructure.
Dengue, too, is posing a serious threat, with the situation worsening in August. While July saw a relatively mild outbreak with only 30 cases, the city has already reported 15 cases this month, averaging two new cases daily. Medical experts warn that the actual number of infected individuals could be significantly higher than official figures, as many cases may go unreported.
