Nagpur’s historic Kasturchand Park is all set to host one of the most anticipated Dussehra celebrations of the year, marking the triumph of good over evil with the burning of the effigies of Demon King Ravan, Kumbhkarna, and Meghnad. This year’s event promises to be particularly special, as the Sanatan Dharm Yuvak Sabha will be staging this grand spectacle for the 74th consecutive year, continuing a long-standing tradition that draws thousands of people from across the city and beyond.
Nagpur Today reporter Avani Arya throws light on this year’s preparations on Ravan Dahan event.
The highlight of the Dussehra Mahotsav at Kasturchand Park is the effigy of Ravan, standing a staggering 60 feet tall, making it the tallest in Central India. Accompanying the towering Ravan will be effigies of his brother Kumbhkarna (55 feet) and his son Meghnad (45 feet). These colossal figures, intricately crafted, symbolize the forces of evil that will be set ablaze in the traditional Ravan Dahan ceremony, a symbolic representation of Lord Ram’s victory over the Demon King Ravan, and the broader message of the triumph of righteousness over malevolence.
The Sanatan Dharm Yuvak Sabha, the organization behind the event, has been holding this celebration at Kasturchand Park for the past 73 years. Since its inception, the Dussehra Mahotsav has grown in both scale and significance, becoming a cherished tradition that draws large crowds annually. Over the years, the Sabha has continually elevated the grandeur of the effigies and the accompanying cultural programs, making the event a major highlight in Nagpur’s festive calendar.
This year’s Dussehra Mahotsav will be held on October 12 evening. The event is expected to see massive attendance, as enthusiasm is already building among the city’s citizens and organizers. With each passing year, the festival continues to inspire anticipation, as it unites Nagpurians in celebrating this ancient tradition.
In addition to the Ravan Dahan, a series of cultural performances are planned to enhance the festive atmosphere. The cultural programs are an integral part of the Dussehra celebrations, adding colour and vibrancy to the event, and making it a wholesome family affair.
A symbol of unity and tradition
The annual burning of the Ravan effigy at Kasturchand Park is more than just a spectacle; it is a powerful symbol of unity and a reminder of the importance of moral values in society. For generations, families have gathered at this venue to witness the Ravan Dahan and partake in the cultural festivities that reinforce the teachings of Ramayana — that truth, justice, and virtue will always prevail.
As Nagpur gears up to celebrate this important festival, the legacy of Sanatan Dharm Yuvak Sabha continues to inspire the younger generation, keeping alive a tradition that celebrates not just religious beliefs, but also the universal message of good triumphing over evil.
