Murder City? Nagpur Ranks 2nd in Violent Crime: NCRB Report Raises Alarm

Nagpur is witnessing a disturbing surge in violent crime, with the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2024 report placing the city among India’s most dangerous metropolitan areas in multiple categories.

The report reveals that Nagpur now ranks second among the country’s 19 metropolitan cities in murder rate, just behind Patna.

According to NCRB data, 88 murder cases were registered in Nagpur in 2024, leading to 90 deaths. The city recorded a murder rate of 3.5 per lakh population — one of the highest in India. Attempted murders also saw a sharp rise, with 192 cases registered and a crime rate of 7.7, far above the metro average of 3.1.

What has shocked investigators most is the reason behind many killings. NCRB analysis shows:

  • 30 murders happened over petty quarrels and minor disputes
  • 16 murders were linked to money-related arguments
  • Several others were connected to family disputes, revenge, and failed relationships

Police data suggests many accused and victims had no serious criminal background, indicating that sudden aggression and uncontrolled anger are increasingly turning everyday arguments into deadly crimes. L

Murders Rising Year After Year

Nagpur’s violent crime graph has steadily climbed over the past three years:

  • 65 murder cases in 2022
  • 79 murder cases in 2023
  • 88 murder cases in 2024

Despite an overall 8.89% drop in total crime, violent offences continue to rise sharply. In total, 21,898 criminal cases were registered in the city during 2024.

Third Highest Hit-and-Run Deaths in India

The NCRB report also exposed Nagpur’s worsening road safety crisis. The city recorded 327 hit-and-run deaths in 2024 — the third highest in the country after Delhi and Patna. This marked an 18% increase from 2023.

Experts have blamed:

  • Reckless driving
  • Weak traffic enforcement
  • Overspeeding
  • Poor surveillance infrastructure

More than 1,300 CCTV cameras in the city are reportedly non-functional, making it difficult for police to track offenders in fatal accidents.

Crimes Against Women Still High

The NCRB report also highlighted growing concerns over women’s safety in Nagpur.

The city ranked fifth among metro cities in rape cases in 2024. A total of 136 rape cases were registered, while overall crimes against women stood at 1,513. Sexual harassment, molestation, domestic violence, and trafficking cases also remained significant.

Bigger Question: Is Nagpur Becoming More Aggressive?

While overall crime numbers may have dipped statistically, the NCRB figures suggest that violent behaviour, intolerance, and rage-driven crimes are increasing rapidly in Nagpur.

From murders over trivial arguments to rising road deaths and attacks on women, the report presents a worrying picture of a city struggling with anger, law enforcement pressure, and declining public discipline.

The data has now sparked serious debate over whether Nagpur’s growing aggression and breakdown of civic behaviour have become a larger social crisis than authorities are willing to admit.
