Nagpur: Finally, Muhurth has been found. After seven years of construction and traffic concerns, the Kamptee Road double-decker flyover is set to open for traffic on Saturday, October 5. While the Nagpur Metro has handed over traffic management to the Nagpur Traffic Department, concerns remain about traffic congestion at the busy Liberty Talkies and LIC Square intersections in the city.

The new flyover may actually increase traffic problems between LIC Square and Samvidhan Square. The addition of the Kamptee Road flyover means there are now three flyovers– Sadar-Mankapur-Katol Road flyover, Ram Jhula flyover, and the new Kamptee Road flyover – on verging in the short stretch between LIC Square and Samvidhan Square. Traffic issues have already been caused by the Sadar flyover, forcing police to divert vehicles via Residency Road, and the new flyover is expected to add to the chaos near LIC Square.

The construction of the 5.67 km-long Kamptee Road flyover, which began seven years ago, faced multiple delays, including a nearly three-year halt due to land acquisition issues. Recently, Maha Metro secured the required land at LIC Square, expediting the construction of the flyover’s ramp and service roads. The project, with a cost of Rs 573 crore, also includes five metro stations — Gaddigodam Square, Kadbi Square, Indora Square, Nari Road, and Automotive Square — and features the country’s first four-level transport system.

A function is organised at LIC Square wherein Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will be chief guest while Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will preside. The entire flyover stands on a single pillar and the flyover has unique features as above it is metro viaduct while below is national highway.

The flyover is four-lane and would provide uninterrupted run from LIC to Automotive Square for the traffic heading directly to Kamptee and other adjoining areas on the route. The Kamptee Road is quite saturated due to mixed movement of traffic and the flyover could provide some respite from traffic snarls.
