Nagpur: Cracking the whip on chronic power bill defaulters, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has launched one of its most aggressive recovery drives in recent years, disconnecting electricity supply to more than 36,000 defaulting consumers across Nagpur district since March 1.

Facing mounting unpaid dues of nearly Rs 43 crore, the power utility has intensified enforcement, deploying special teams to carry out mass disconnections in several parts of the city and rural areas. Officials said the campaign was launched with clear instructions to maximise recovery and take firm action against habitual defaulters who have ignored repeated reminders and notices.

Power cuts under police protection

In sensitive pockets such as Mankapur and Nai Basti under the Lashkaribagh subdivision, recovery squads were forced to operate under police protection while disconnecting electricity supply to hundreds of consumers who had failed to clear long-pending dues.

Officials said the drive was met with resistance in some localities, highlighting the challenges faced by field staff while enforcing payment discipline.

The crackdown took a violent turn in Katol town, where an MSEDCL recovery team was allegedly attacked while performing official duty. Following the incident, police registered a case against those involved.

Senior officials issued a stern warning that any attempt to obstruct government work or intimidate utility staff would invite strict legal action.

Govt bodies also in line of fire

The enforcement drive has not been limited to individual consumers. Several local self-government bodies have also come under the scanner for failing to clear electricity dues.

According to officials, nearly Rs 10 crore remains unpaid by water supply schemes operated by local institutions across the district. As a result, MSEDCL has issued a strong ultimatum to Nagar Panchayats, Municipal Councils and Block Development Officers, directing them to immediately clear outstanding payments.

Authorities warned that continued default could lead to disconnection of electricity supply to critical public utilities, including water supply systems and street lighting, which may severely affect civic services.

“No tolerance for non-payment”

With dues piling up and the financial burden mounting, officials indicated that the recovery drive will continue with zero tolerance for non-payment.

The aggressive crackdown sends a clear message that the power utility is no longer willing to absorb mounting losses caused by defaulters, and that strict enforcement will remain the cornerstone of its recovery strategy in the coming weeks.
