The Election Commission has announced that the biennial elections to fill several vacant seats in the Legislative Councils of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana will be held on December 10. The counting of votes will be held on December 14.

Elections will be held for 54 seats from 42 local bodies across the four states. While the term of the sitting members in the Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra Legislative Councils will expire between January 1 and January 5, 2022, the terms of 11 members in Andhra Pradesh have already expired, for which the elections are being held now.

Karnataka has the largest number of vacant seats at 25, followed by Telangana (12), Andhra Pradesh (11) and Maharashtra (6).

The EC said the model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect. The code prevents the governments from taking populist decisions that may influence voters in these constituencies.
