Nagpur: Maharashtra Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Agriculture Ashish Jaiswal reviewed key issues related to the Agriculture Department and other pressing matters during a meeting held in Nagpur on Tuesday, with a strong focus on monsoon preparedness, farm planning, and policy implementation.
Preparedness amid rainfall uncertainty
Addressing concerns over the monsoon, the Minister noted that historically, one out of every ten years witnesses below-average rainfall, citing 2017 as a recent example. However, he assured that the Nagpur district is currently well-prepared, with substantial water storage available in reservoirs.
“Even if rainfall falls short of the average, we are fully equipped to manage the situation,” he said.
He cautioned that prolonged dry spells between rains could force farmers into re-sowing, stressing the need for efficient water management and timely guidance to farmers. The administration has been directed to remain fully prepared to tackle any adverse situation.
Field monitoring and crop planning
The Minister instructed officials to conduct regular field visits, directly assess farm conditions, and upload geo-tagged photographs to ensure accountability and real-time monitoring of on-ground activities.
Emphasis was also laid on effective implementation of the “Maharashtra 2047” agriculture plan, particularly in promoting crop diversification.
In areas with adequate water availability, scientific water management practices will be implemented. The government is also considering providing borewells to tribal farmers to enhance irrigation access. A comprehensive review of all agriculture schemes has been ordered to ensure better planning and execution.
Fertiliser demand and push for organic farming
Highlighting the rising demand for chemical fertilisers, the Minister noted that last year also witnessed heavy lifting of fertiliser stocks. He directed officials not to issue unnecessary licenses for fertiliser sales and to ensure there is no shortage under any circumstances.
At the same time, the government is making efforts to promote organic farming as a sustainable alternative.
On Cabinet reshuffle speculation
Responding to questions about a possible Cabinet reshuffle before Diwali, the Minister said that Eknath Shinde, as the top leader, holds the authority to take such decisions based on merit.
“No official stance has been announced yet. The final decision will rest with the party leadership,” he clarified.
Remarks on Sanjay Raut
Commenting on Sanjay Raut, the Minister said there appears to be a significant shift in his ideological stance. He alleged that Raut’s association with the Congress has influenced his views, which could have repercussions for his party.
On Bachchu Kadu and political growth
Speaking about Bachchu Kadu, the Minister said every political party has the right to expand and every worker aspires to see their leader rise to the top. He added that while Vidarbha was neglected in the past, it is now receiving focused attention under Deputy Chief Minister Shinde’s leadership. He also pointed out that Prataprao Jadhav has been given a ministerial role at the Centre, reflecting increased representation.
On West Bengal elections
Referring to the West Bengal elections, the Minister termed the outcome as “massive and unprecedented,” stating that it reflects public support for inclusive governance and ideological clarity.
