Nagpur: The festive rush of the wedding season has pushed traffic on the Kamptee-Nagpur Road into near chaos, with rampant illegal parking by marriage lawns and banquet halls compounding congestion caused by ongoing Metro construction. With the carriageway already constricted due to infrastructure work, vehicles belonging to wedding guests are being brazenly parked along the National Highway, choking traffic flow and raising serious safety concerns.
Commuters and residents say that during peak wedding hours, long stretches of the highway are virtually converted into makeshift parking zones. The unchecked parking has triggered prolonged traffic snarls, frequent near-miss accidents and severe inconvenience to emergency vehicles, city buses and office-goers. Similar scenes are unfolding in other parts of the city, where event venues continue to operate without ensuring adequate on-site parking facilities.
Traffic police officials have admitted that the situation has worsened due to a convergence of factors. While Metro construction has reduced the effective width of key roads, the surge in wedding-related traffic has further strained the already burdened network. Authorities said enforcement drives have been intensified, with special teams deployed to monitor identified hotspots and initiate immediate action against violators for causing obstruction and endangering public safety.
The growing public outrage has also put the spotlight on the role of commercial establishments and vehicle owners alike. Citizens have questioned the effectiveness of routine challans, demanding tougher and more visible action against those responsible for blocking major roads.
In response, the traffic department has announced a technology-driven crackdown to strengthen enforcement. As part of the initiative, 1,000 traffic jammers have been procured and will be distributed across all traffic zones. Officials said the jammers will be used to immobilise illegally parked vehicles, acting as a strong deterrent against repeat offenders and helping restore smoother traffic movement on highways and arterial roads.
Traffic authorities have issued a stern warning to marriage lawns and banquet halls, making it clear that venues failing to provide sufficient parking within their premises will face strict penal action, including repeated fines and legal proceedings. Officials reiterated that illegal parking on major roads and national highways will not be tolerated, especially at a time when key routes are already under pressure due to large-scale infrastructure projects.
