Nagpur: A senior Head of Department (HOD) at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (Mayo) has been booked for allegedly sexually harassing and mentally torturing a female doctor over an extended period. Following a detailed complaint by the survivor, Tehsil Police registered a case against the accused. The incident has triggered unrest on the hospital campus, with resident doctors expressing strong resentment.

The accused has been identified as Dr. Makarand Suryakant Vyavahare (56). According to the complaint, between February 3 and November 19, 2025, Dr. Vyavahare repeatedly subjected the survivor to unethical and inappropriate behaviour. He allegedly instructed her to come to work dressed in a “special manner,” called her into his cabin frequently, made her sit extremely close, and spoke in a low tone to intimidate her.

He also allegedly threatened to terminate her employment and repeatedly belittled her in front of colleagues. Several times, the survivor reportedly broke down emotionally, but he allegedly dismissed her tears saying, “Stop acting.”

In one instance, when the survivor approached him with a leave request, the accused allegedly insisted that she write a false complaint against an associate professor in exchange for approval. Disturbed, she burst into tears.

The complaint further alleges that during a post-mortem examination, in the presence of other doctors, he touched her inappropriately.

Following these incidents, the survivor confided in her colleagues, who encouraged her to escalate the matter.

Unable to bear the persistent harassment, the survivor submitted a written complaint to Mayo Hospital Dean, Dr. Ravi Chavan. The revelations sparked tension in the hospital, leading to heated discussions and unrest among resident doctors.

After conducting a preliminary inquiry, Tehsil Police registered a case against Dr. Makarand Vyavahare under multiple sections related to harassment and criminal intimidation.

The matter has created significant turmoil within the institution, and further investigation is underway. Hospital authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding administrative action.
