Man awarded life imprisonment in Imambada murder case

Nagpur: District Judge –1 and Additional Sessions Judge M S Azmi on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to Swapnil alias Tawri Rajendra Ramteke in the sensational Jitu Khandare murder case.

According to the prosecution, Ramteke (36), a resident of Babulkheda, Jitu alias Jitendra Mahadeo Khandare (32), also a resident of New Babukheda, were cousins. Since childhood they were more good friends than cousins. Both enjoyed liquor and shared a plate together. Khandare’s wife had left him after the couple could not have a child for eight years after marriage. Since then, he became an alcoholic. Around 1 am on March 15, 2016, Ramteke and Khandare consumed liquor near Medical Square. Later, they had dinner together at a nearby eatery.

An argument broke out between them over some financial transaction when they were on their way to Ramteke’s house. Between Medical Square and Baidyanath Square, they started abusing each other. Ramteke lost his temper. He lifted a brick and smashed Khandare’s head killing him on the spot. Passersby nabbed Ramteke and handed him over to Imambada Police who arrested him on charges under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code around 8.46 am on the same day.

Assistant Police Inspector Mohankar, who was the investigating officer, probed the matter and chargesheeted Ramteke. As the charges were proved against Ramteke, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5000.

Additional Public Prosecutor Rashmi Khaperde represented the State. Adv Rishikesh Dhale was the defence counsel.
