Nagpur: Vidarbha’s ambition to emerge as a major automobile and engineering manufacturing destination has received a significant boost with Mahindra & Mahindra taking possession of 800 acres in the additional Butibori industrial area for its proposed automobile and tractor manufacturing hub, involving an investment of over Rs 15,000 crore.
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) handed over possession of the land on Monday, completing a key milestone within six months of the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at Advantage Vidarbha 2026. The project, expected to generate more than 20,000 direct jobs, is among the major industrial investments poised to strengthen Vidarbha’s manufacturing base and create fresh economic opportunities in the region.
Mahindra has paid MIDC more than Rs 706 crore for the 800-acre parcel. The company has been allocated a total of 1,500 acres for the project, with possession of the remaining 700 acres expected to be handed over subsequently. The greenfield manufacturing facility is scheduled to commence production in 2028.
Once fully operational, the integrated complex is planned to have an annual manufacturing capacity exceeding five lakh vehicles and one lakh tractors. The scale of the proposed facility underlines the strategic importance of the investment, which is expected to strengthen the region’s industrial ecosystem, attract ancillary industries and create opportunities across manufacturing, logistics, engineering and support services.
Major boost to Vidarbha’s industrial landscape
The timely transfer of land marks a crucial step in translating investment commitments made at Advantage Vidarbha 2026 into ground-level industrial development. The project is expected to give fresh momentum to the additional Butibori industrial area, already an important manufacturing destination, while reinforcing Nagpur’s potential as a centre for large-scale industrial investment.
The establishment of a major automobile and tractor manufacturing complex could also encourage component manufacturers, engineering firms, transport operators, warehousing companies and other service providers to expand their presence in the region. Such supporting industries can generate additional employment and business opportunities beyond the jobs created directly by the manufacturing facility.
The project’s impact is expected to extend beyond Nagpur, with its supplier ecosystem and associated infrastructure potentially benefiting other industrial centres across Maharashtra.
According to the company’s plans, the automotive division will manufacture vehicles based on multiple powertrain technologies, including internal combustion engines and electric vehicles, alongside next-generation vehicle platforms. This flexibility is expected to enable the facility to cater to evolving market requirements as the automobile industry expands its product offerings and transitions towards newer technologies.
The tractor manufacturing unit, meanwhile, will serve both domestic demand and export markets. The proposed production capacity reflects the importance of agricultural machinery in Mahindra’s business and the potential to use the Nagpur facility as a significant manufacturing base.
The integrated nature of the project is expected to provide opportunities for the development of a wider industrial ecosystem, particularly in automobile components, precision engineering, fabrication, assembly and other manufacturing-related activities.
Supplier park and skilling centre to widen benefits
The proposed investment is also linked to a broader industrial development plan involving a separate 150-acre supplier park in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The supplier park is expected to support the manufacturing ecosystem by providing space for vendors and component suppliers associated with the company’s operations.
In another significant component of the plan, Mahindra intends to establish a skilling centre in Nagpur. The proposed centre could help develop a trained workforce for the automotive and tractor manufacturing sectors, equipping local youth with industry-relevant technical skills and improving their access to employment opportunities.
The combination of large-scale manufacturing, supplier development and skill training is expected to create a more comprehensive industrial ecosystem. However, the eventual scale of indirect employment and the extent of participation by local businesses will depend on the implementation of the associated plans.
Senior officials attend land handover
The land possession formalities were completed in the presence of MIDC regional officer Manohar Pote and chief engineer Rajesh Zanjal, who handed over the land to Vinay Khanolkar, Chief Operating Officer of Mahindra’s automotive division; Nitin Vaidya, plant head of the Nagpur project; and Ashish Sodte.
Kapil Chandrayan, chief executive officer of the Association for Industrial Development (AID), which helped facilitate the land transfer, was also present.
Chandrayan said completing the land transfer within six months of the MoU was an important step towards creating a favourable environment for industrial investment in Vidarbha.
He said the project was expected to provide a major impetus to the region’s industrial growth and employment generation.
With the first phase of land possession completed and production targeted for 2028, attention will now turn to the subsequent transfer of the remaining land and the development of the proposed manufacturing complex. The project’s progress is likely to be closely watched for its potential to transform Butibori into an even more significant automobile and tractor manufacturing destination while strengthening Nagpur’s position on Maharashtra’s industrial map.
