Yoga Mahotsav will be celebrated in Maharashtra in a grand manner on June 21, said Minister for Education and Sports Vinod Tawde while replying to a question raised by BJP’s Ashish Shelar in Assembly. An independent committee will be formed to oversee the celebration of Yoga Mahotsav, added Tawde.

It is significant to recall that the United Nations General Assembly had adopted an India-led resolution declaring June 21 as ‘International Day of Yoga’. The announcement comes less than three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea. The resolution was co-sponsored by 175 nations, the highest number ever for any resolution in the 193-member UN Genral Assembly. This is also for the first time that such an initiative has been proposed and implemented by any country in the UN body in less than 90 days. In view of the United Nations declaration, BJP MLA Ashish Shelar had demanded celebration of ‘Yoga Day’ in Maharashtra during Question Hour in Assembly. Replying to the demand, the Education Minister Vinod Tawde said that in Maharashtra too Yoga Mahotsav will be celebrated on June 21. The day will be celebrated at district-levels also across the State.
