Maharashtra has over 2.56 crore ration card holders as on Dec 31, 2022: RTI

The figures contradict NITI Aayog’s claim that 25 percent of people have come out of poverty, says RTI activist Sanjay Agarwal

Nagpur: The Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department of Maharashtra, in response to a query under Right to Information (RTI) Act, said that Maharashtra has a total of 2,56,55,314 crore ration card holders, including Yellow card holders — 37,00,715 (Below Poverty Line), 25,60,335 Antyodaya card holders and 90,35,523 Tricolour card holders. The number of saffron card holders is 8,87,481 and the rest 22.21 lakh are APL card holders, till December 31, 2022.

Nagpur district has total 12,89,341 card holders including 1,21,174 BPL, 1,22,922 Antyodaya, 5,62,265 Tricolour, 75,062 White card holders and 4,07,618 are APL card holders.

The RTI activist of Nagpur Sanjay Agarwal had submitted a query to the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department of Maharashtra under RTI Act. He had sought information regarding total number of Antyodaya Ration Cards, Below Poverty Line (BPL) Ration Cards and Above Poverty Line (APL) Ration Cards in the State. Agarwal had also sought district wise figures of the total number of the above three types of ration cards in the year 2014 and district wise figures of the total number of the above three types of ration cards in the year 2024.

The Department replied that as on December 31, 2014, the total number of ration card holders in the State was 2,37,10,666. These card holders include Yellow card holders – 45,34,836 (Below Poverty Line), 24,72,753 Antyodaya card holders and 1,46,45,023 Saffron card holders. The number of Annapurna card holders was 64,866 and the rest 19,93,188 are White (APL) card holders.

As far as Nagpur district is concerned, as on December 31, 2014, the total number of ration card holders was 7,49,863. These include 1,36,894 BPL, 1,00,612 Antyodaya, 4,36,116 Saffron, 6,902 Annapurna, and 69,339 White card holders.

Agarwal said that the above information was used in the report of NITI Aayog in which it was claimed that during the Modi era, 25 percent of the people have come out of poverty. “But the figures contradict the NITI Aayog claim,” asserted Agarwal.
