Maharashtra first State to set up Transgender Welfare Board

Nagpur: Maharashtra Government has announced a Transgender Welfare Board for the third gender. Minister of State for Social Justice Dilip Kamble talking to the media informed about government’s decision. The government had set aside Rs 5 crores for the welfare of the community. Transgender Welfare Board will look after the education, employment, housing and health of third gender. Besides this, it will also protect their constitutional and Human rights.

The minister said Maharashtra State is first such state to set uo this a welfare board. It first conceptualised in 2014 by the previous government. In the year 2013 the cabinet had accepted, the issue of setting up of such a board for implementing the welfare schemes for transgenders and protecting their rights was mentioned in the third women’s policy of state government.

State Women and Child Welfare Ministry was entrusted with the responsibility of setting up the board which prepared the board framework for implementing education, health, and housing policies as well as generating employment opportunities for transgenders.
