The arrested accused in connection with the hit-and-run case have been identified as Sunny Surendra Chauhan (37), a resident of Imambada; Anshul Vijay Dhale (24), a resident of Jattarodi, and Akash Naresh Mehroliya (31), a resident of Gawlipura, Kamptee.

According to police, Sunny and Anshul have a history of eight criminal cases, including assault, registered against them. Among the victims of the hit-and-run incident are Wasim Sheikh, his wife Najnin, their one-and-a-half-month old son Johan, and Sachin Suryabhan Subedar (46) from Shivaji Nagar.

The incident occurred on Friday night when Sunny and his companions, under the influence of alcohol and ganja, were travelling home in a Mahindra Logan car (MH31/CP-6736). Sunny, driving at a high speed, collided with a two-wheeler (MH-40/BR-4385) at Zenda Chowk in Mahal which resulted in injuries to Najnin, and Johan. Soon after, the car struck Sachin’s bike, injuring him as well.

The family was on its way to visit relatives when the incident occurred. The speeding car came from the Lakda Pool area and hit Wasim’s two-wheeler near Natraj Talkies. Naznin fell on the road along with the two-wheeler, while Johan fell on the other side head-first on the road. Before Naznin could understand what had happened, the car dragged her along with the two-wheeler. In the process, the car hit a motorcycle driven by Sachin Subhedar. He also fell on the road and sustained grievous injuries. However, the car driver did not stop the vehicle and crashed into vehicles parked on the roadside before hitting pedestrians.

Following the accident, enraged citizens assaulted the accused and vandalised their car. On Sunday, the police reconstructed the accident scene and interrogated the accused about the source of alcohol and ganja.
