Nagpur: After days of scorching sunshine that appeared to signal the arrival of the city’s notorious summer, the weather in Nagpur took an abrupt turn yet again. By Wednesday night, dark clouds gathered and showers lashed parts of the city, interrupting the rising heat and leaving residents surprised.
Over the past few days, temperatures across Vidarbha had steadily climbed, with the mercury crossing the 40°C mark earlier this week. However, in a pattern that has become increasingly common in recent years, a sudden spike in temperature was quickly followed by unseasonal rain.
The Meteorological Department had already forecast rain and thunderstorm activity in Nagpur on April 1, and the prediction proved accurate as showers arrived accompanied by thunderclouds.
The unexpected rainfall could cast a shadow over the festive mood building up in the city ahead of Hanuman Jayanti celebrations. Many parts of Nagpur are already draped in saffron decorations as devotees prepare to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman. Several temples have also arranged large-scale distribution of mahaprasad, but the changing weather may disrupt these preparations.
Meanwhile, the weather department has issued a yellow alert for the entire Vidarbha region until April 5, warning of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and the possibility of hailstorms in isolated pockets.
While the rain has brought temporary relief from the heat, it is not welcome news for farmers. Untimely showers have already caused damage to standing rabi crops in several parts of Vidarbha. The thunderstorm activity also triggered power outages in multiple residential areas, leaving citizens grappling with sudden darkness and inconvenience.
