Nagpur: After months of deliberations, Maha Metro has finally zeroed in on a revised design to correct flaws in the Sadar Flyover, bringing clarity to one of the Nagpur’s most contentious infrastructure projects. As per the near-finalised plan, the flyover will now begin near Liberty Talkies and land opposite the RBI petrol pump, crossing the RBI Square.
Metro officials said the revised alignment will allow commuters coming from the Sadar side to avoid negotiating two traffic signals, resulting in significant time savings. The new landing is also expected to ease chronic congestion at Kasturchand Park and RBI Square, both of which have been major bottlenecks.
Following nearly seven months of consultations, Maha Metro has initiated steps to move forward with a final design option after discussions with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. A detailed project report (DPR) incorporating the revised design is currently being prepared and is expected to be finalised and submitted to the Union Minister within the next 10 days.
Length Increased, cost likely to rise
Metro officials said that an amount of Rs 36 crore had earlier been sanctioned by Gadkari when the plan was to bring the flyover down at Kasturchand Park. However, with the landing now extended up to the RBI petrol pump, the length of the flyover has increased, making a rise in project cost inevitable.
The revised DPR will reflect the enhanced cost, and construction will commence only after approval for the additional expenditure is granted.
National highway closed due to design flaws
Officials admitted that due to serious design errors, a National Highway has remained closed for years, an unprecedented situation. The prolonged closure has caused severe inconvenience to commuters heading towards Kamptee Road, while the entire Sadar area has borne the brunt of traffic chaos.
With motorists forced to use alternate routes, many of which are narrow, the area witnesses daily traffic snarls, further underscoring the urgency of redesigning the flyover.
Need for reconfiguration
The eastern end of the Sadar Flyover, which was inaugurated in January 2020, has been plagued by traffic congestion and complaints of faulty design from the outset. Following the intervention of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Maha Metro appointed Astrum Techno Consultants to study the issue and suggest solutions. The consultant examined three design alternatives, out of which one has now been almost finalised.
A senior official said the primary objective is to ensure smooth traffic flow and technically correct curvature so that the problem is resolved permanently. Maha Metro is coordinating with agencies such as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to ensure minimal disruption to traffic once construction resumes.
Reduced land requirement
Earlier, the landing was proposed inside Kasturchand Park, which would have required land acquisition. However, with the revised alignment, only pillars will be constructed within the park premises, significantly reducing the need for land.
The flyover will now descend near the petrol pump, where land requirements are minimal. Officials said this change has resulted in cost savings under the land acquisition component, despite the overall project cost likely increasing due to the extended length.
Tender and construction timeline
Officials said the final plan from the consultant is expected within 10 days. Once the design is approved, tenders will be floated immediately. Ground work is likely to begin within two months, tentatively by February or March 2026.
Heritage concerns addressed
Maha Metro has assured that the revised design has been prepared with special attention to ensure that no adverse impact is caused to the heritage status of Kasturchand Park.
