Land Mafia Shifts Target to Builders: ₹3 Crore Fraud Exposed in Nagpur

Nagpur: The city’s infamous land mafia—once known for duping homebuyers—has now turned its focus toward builders and layout developers. Exploiting their eagerness for prime plots, fraudsters are offering to “regularize” disputed lands through supposed political or bureaucratic connections, triggering a new wave of multi-crore scams.

According to Nagpur Police, cases of land-related cheating involving developers have surged in recent months. Many victims, however, hesitate to file complaints, fearing reputational harm within the industry. “Fraudsters lure builders with attractive but disputed land, claiming they can secure quick clearance through influential contacts. Several developers have fallen prey to these false promises,” police sources revealed.

In one recent case, real estate developer Motilal Jiyalal Chaudhary (46), a resident of Rajeshwar Park, Manish Nagar, alleged he was cheated of ₹3 crore by Ramankar Krishnamohan Korpati (54), Madhukar Korpati (57), and Srinivas Korpati (53)—all residents of Bhendala, Tarsa, Mouda—along with brokers Vikram Meshram and Ashok Aswani.

“The accused presented fake clearance papers for land adjoining my project and claimed they could settle ownership disputes. I paid them ₹3 crore in instalments, only to later discover the land belonged to the Forest Department,” Chaudhary said. “When questioned, they reassured me that they would ‘regularize’ it through their contacts. Later, I found that other developers had been duped similarly.”

Names such as the Korpati family, Dilip Gwalbanshi, and Shoeb Asad have surfaced repeatedly in similar complaints across multiple police stations—indicating an organised syndicate of land racketeers operating throughout Nagpur.

Confirming the development, Deputy Commissioner of Police (EoW) Mahak Swami stated, “Land scams have become increasingly common in Nagpur, and even reputed builders are not immune. These racketeers tempt developers with low-priced plots and fake assurances of clearance. Police are taking strict action and urge victims to come forward and file complaints with the nearest police station or directly with the EoW.”

With the land mafia now targeting the very builders shaping Nagpur’s skyline, authorities stress that early reporting and greater public awareness are vital to dismantling the city’s expanding network of fraudulent land dealings.
