Kanhan river water at alarmingly critical level

Nagpur: Its just February …beginning of Summer and the water flow in the Kanhan river has receded to alarmingly critical level.

The river flow as measured today morning at the upstream Beena Confluence was 129MLD, which is too less which is too less for the KanhanWater Treatment Plant (WTP )to operate at full capacity. This has already adversely affected the morning water supply in the North and Eastern part of Nagpur city and may affect for few more days.

It may be mentioned here, due to scanty rainfall last monsoon and commissioning of Chaurai dam in the upstream of Totlahdoh dam in the state of Madhya Pradesh the stored water in Dams is less than 30%.

In view of the approaching summer and demand for water NMC-OCW requested The collector of Nagpur for release of additional water in the Kanhan river.

On instructionof Hon. Collector , Mr Sachin Kurve, , The Water Resources Department(WRD) , Pench Irrigation has released 50Cusecs of water from chainage 19.4Km on Right Bank Canal(RBC).

The released water from the RBC escape gate will flow through 32 km drain and river channel to reach at the Kanhan intake well in another 72 Hours from now i.e by morning of 10th February,2018. OCW-NMC has planned for controlled supply during this period such that the adverse affect on the water supply in North and Eastern part of Nagar can be minimized.

OCW-NMC has started vigilance for elimination of any kind of obstruction(trench, temporary bhandara or diversion) and ensure normal flow of released water of this 32Km pathway to reach the Kanhan intake wells.

At Kanhan WTP , the river water has been completely re-channelized towards the intake well and temporary Bhandara has been built to literally to ensure no amount of river water flow downstream.

OCW-NMC has place sand bags in the Right Bank Canal(RBC) of the WRD Irrigation dept

These sand bags will help in diverting the released water towards the escape gate.
