Jolt to CM Fadnavis as BJP tastes crushing defeat in Nagar Panchayat polls in Nagpur District

Nagpur: In a major embarrassment for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday faced a crushing defeat in Nagar Panchayat elections in his home Nagpur District. Results of the Nagar Panchayat elections were announced on Monday. The Chief Minister, in recent days, had announced a slew of development projects for Nagpur District and his party was hoping for a good show in the Nagar Panchayat elections. Following are the results in the district:

In Hingna Taluka, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) bagged 11 seats out of total 17 while BJP could muster only 6 seats.

Out of 17 seats in Bhivapur, BJP was left content with only 3 seats while 4 seats went to Shiv Sena, 5 seats were won by Congress and 3 by BSP. One seat was bagged by an Independent.

In Kuhi, the BJP was relegated to second position with win in five seats out of total 17 seats while Congress emerged victorious in 8 seats. Shiv Sena and NCP won one seat each and the Independents 2.

The results are seen as a major jolt to BJP and to Chief Minister himself as Fadnavis was in command during the electioneering. The ‘go-alone’ strategy of BJP, it seems, has misfired as the party could not garner majority at the three Nagar Panchayats on its own.
