Nagpur: The City Wing of Indian Youth Congress, led by Bunty Shelke, organized a Drawing Contest for school students to mark the death anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi today. The event was held at the same well that was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi to eradicate the practice of untouchability. The well is situated at Barasignal, Borkar Nagar, Ghat Road in city.
The Indian Youth Congress has in the past several times submitted memorandums to Mayor and District Collector demanding heritage status to the well. However, forget the heritage status, the slumbering administration did not make any efforts to clean the well and its surroundings on the occasion of Gandhi’s death anniversary.
With the concept of eradication of untouchability, the Drawing Contest for the school students was organized by the Indian Youth Congress. In all 40 students who drew excellent drawings were awarded mementoes having Mahatma Gandhi’s image while the remaining participants were given certificates. The activists and office-bearers of IYC carried out ‘Shramdaan’ and cleaned the historic well. Senior Corporator Praful Gudadhe Patil was prominently present on the occasion.
Among those who participated in the programme include President Bunty Shelke, Secretary Nikita Dilip Khairwar, Rohit Khairwar, former MLA Bhola Badhel, Baba Shelke, Omprakash Mahto, and a large number of IYC activists and citizens.
