IMD predicts more rains in Nagpur, Vidarbha for next 2-3 days

Nagpur: With heavy rains lashing Nagpur since 72 hours, several areas are water-logged leading to massive traffic congestion. For the third consecutive day, Nagpur received heavy rains that activated all government machinery to handle any untoward incident not only in the city but also in Vidarbha.

Within one month of the monsoon, Nagpur has so far received 314.9 mm rain which is 14% above normal. OnMonday, Nagpur received 39.6 mm of rainfall. India Meteorological Department (IMD) again on Monday issued ‘Red Alert’ for Gadchiroli district for July 11 and 12 whereas it issued ‘Orange Alert’ for Nagpur, Chandrapur, Amravati andWashim for next two days.

IMD also issued a Flash Flood Risk (FFR) statement for Vidarbha region in next 24 hours. According to weather department, “Moderate risk of Flash Flood likely over few watersheds and neighbourhoods of East Vidarbha, South Vidarbha, East Madhya Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, Konkan and Goa, Saurashtra and Kutch, South Gujarat Region, Chhattisgarh and North Telangana in next 24 hours.”

One team each of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) stationed in Nagpur, are ready to handle any flood like situation. In the last one month, 14 deaths have been reported in Nagpur district due to natural calamity. Eleven persons died due to lightning strike,2 swept away in nullah and one died due to structure collapse.

Due to heavy rain in Gadchiroli, in the last 24 hours, 353 persons were evacuated to safer places by SDRF. However, one MSEDCL employee died due to the flood situation in Gadchiroli. In last 24 hours, Nagpur received the highest 117.2 mm rainfall followed by Chandrapur (83.4 mm), Gadchiroli (82.2 mm), Gondia (59.8mm), Wardha (38.6 mm), Amravati (27.8 mm), Bramhapuri (27 mm), Yavatmal (12 mm), Akola (5.2 mm) and Buldhana (4 mm).

The weather department predicted more heavy rains all over Vidarbha for the next 2-3 days. It also instructed district administration to be prepared to avoid any flood-like situation.
