The India Meteorology Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a yellow alert indicating moderate to heavy rainfall in several pockets of central Maharashtra and Marathwada regions including Sholapur, Nanded, Latur, Osmanabad, Amravati, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Nagpur.
IMD also stated that during the later part of the coming week, some of these areas, including Chandrapur may also experience heatwave-like conditions.
IMD officials said current weather conditions are a result of a trough that had developed above these regions.
“On Saturday (March 30) several pockets in Marathwada and central Maharashtra recorded rainfall along with gusty winds and thunderstorms. This rainfall is short term and may carry on today (March 31) only,” Sushma Nair, scientist from IMD, Mumbai, told Express on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Mumbai on a daily basis is recording an average maximum temperature between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. Nair said that after April 5, there might be a sudden increase in temperature that may cause discomfort.
