Nagpur: The Income Tax department, on Monday, issued a notice to taxpayers whose cases have been flagged under the e-verification scheme, urging them to submit updated Income Tax returns for the 2021-22 assessment year by March 31. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) highlighted that in some Income Tax Returns (ITRs) filed for the assessment year 2021-22 (fiscal year 2020-21), discrepancies have been identified between the information provided in the ITRs and the information regarding specified financial transactions available with the department.

For cases where ITRs for the assessment year 2021-22 have not been filed, and the department possesses information regarding specified high-value financial transactions, these cases will also be scrutinized. As part of the e-Verification Scheme-2021, the department is currently in the process of sending communications to taxpayers regarding the discrepancies in information related to the assessment year 2021-22 (fiscal year 2020-21).

These communications are being sent to taxpayers via their registered email accounts with the Income Tax department. Taxpayers are strongly advised by the department to check their Annual Information Statement (AIS) through the e-filing portal and file updated ITRs (ITR-U) where necessary.
