The competition begins with a regular season in which clubs play against each other in a league format. Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 for a defeat. The objective is to finish high enough in the table to qualify for the different playoff groups or avoid relegation.

After the regular season, the league splits into separate playoff competitions. The exact structure has changed over time, but recent formats have included 3 elements:

the Champions’ Play-offs;
the Europe Play-offs;
and a relegation phase.

An unusual format

In the Champions’ Play-offs, the highest-ranked teams from the regular season compete for the Belgian championship and European qualification. In previous versions of the format, the top 4 teams entered this group, although later reforms expanded the championship playoff in some seasons. The teams play additional matches against each other, and points from the regular season may be reduced by half before the playoffs begin. This “points split” is designed to keep the title race competitive until the end.

The Europe Play-offs give teams outside the title race another opportunity to qualify for European competitions. These teams compete for a chance to earn a final European place, sometimes through an additional playoff match against a higher-ranked club from the championship group.

The relegation system determines which clubs leave the 1st level and go down to the 2nd division. Teams at the bottom of the table enter a relegation playoff or face direct relegation depending on the season’s rules. The team finishing last is normally at the greatest risk, while other clubs may have to play promotion/relegation matches against teams from the 2nd tier, the Challenger Pro League.

One of the most distinctive features of Belgian football is that the playoffs can dramatically change the final standings. A team that performs strongly during the regular season can still lose its advantage after the points reduction, while another club can rise quickly during the playoff phase. This has produced surprising title races, including cases where teams outside the top position after the regular season went on to become champions.
