Nagpur: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur has been selected as one of the exclusive medical institutions in Maharashtra to establish three advanced skill labs, valued at Rs 29 crore, aimed at enhancing the training for postgraduate students and faculty, with a special emphasis on surgeons. Additionally, a cutting-edge nuclear medicine diagnostic unit, costing Rs 9 crore, is in the process of being set up through funds allocated by the District Planning and Development Committee (DPDC).
Nuclear medicine diagnosis plays a pivotal role in the early detection of various conditions, including cancers, heart diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine issues, and neurological disorders. The procedures involved in nuclear medicine provide crucial functional information by pinpointing molecular activity within the body.
The three state-of-the-art skill labs are designed to be equipped with mannequins, simulators, and teaching modules, catering to the comprehensive training needs of postgraduate medical students and serving as refresher courses for faculty members. The inclusion of simulators enables students and faculty to acquire essential clinical skills, such as the proper insertion of IV needles into veins, before they apply these skills in real-life medical scenarios.
The investment in these skill labs not only enhances the educational experience for medical professionals but also contributes to the overall improvement of patient care by ensuring that healthcare practitioners are well-prepared and proficient in their clinical skills.
Simultaneously, the establishment of the nuclear medicine diagnostic unit signifies a significant stride in diagnostic capabilities. This unit, with an investment of Rs 9 crore, will play a crucial role in early and accurate diagnosis, further elevating the standard of healthcare services provided by GMCH Nagpur.
According to a local media report, the surgical simulators are meant for each department and can be used to train for all procedures. These simulators let doctors practice on mannequins to strengthen their clinical practice. Margins of errors get ruled out because of hands-on training. The yet-to-be named skill labs would be housed in the academic building of GMCH. One lab is worth Rs 5 crore, another Rs Rs 4 crore and the third worth Rs 21 crore, the report added.
It further said that the Rs 21 crore project is in the final stages of tendering. The Rs 5 crore lab will have mannequins and simulators. The laparoscopic simulators and screens shall help learn how to dissect, clip vessels or bile duct. Similarly, nitty-gritties of joint replacements for orthopaedics students or hysterectomy for gynaecology, tracheostomy for anaesthesiology could be learnt, the report stated.
The simulators have different software and teaching modules to clear ideas and gain expertise in surgery.
In another development, the much-awaited robotic arm worth Rs 20 crore too has finally been procured by the GMCH administration. No other government hospital has a robotic surgery system in the State so far. The robot would soon be installed in the surgery department after trial runs are conducted.
