Got an opportunity to visit the Airport south station of Nagpur metro. It has some really impressive features that no metro has incorporated so far! Some of these are:
The station is built with an eye to be ‘user friendly’ to both physically handicapped and the blind. There is a ramp to enter the station; the entry for wheelchairs into coaches is easily possible since platform and coach floor are at same level. For the blind there are ‘Tectile tiles’ that will lead them to the coach. (These are tiles with a rough surface which can be felt even with shoes on.)
*On the station walls there are Terracotta tiles for a cooling effect.
*This station is designed in the modern contemporary style. Each station will have different and unique designs; for instance Khapri has a Victorian facade and New Airport Indo Sarsanic.
*But inside, each station will be the same; spacious, open, airy with helpers present to make it easy for ‘first time metro users’.
*To cross over to the other platform for the Down travel, there are steps, escalators and lifts.
*There is a huge car bay and parking for cycles and other two wheelers right outside the station.
*The roof of every station has solar panels for power generation which will be used to run metros.
*Safety instructions and precautions are painted in bold on the station walls.
*And finally, the entire station including the Rest Rooms was sparkling clean and well appointed!
In short, when you step into a metro station to begin your day’s journey to your working place/ college/ for any other chore, your mood will definitely be uplifted by the pleasant environs of each station.
