Havoc as rains batter Nagpur district for last 15 days

Administration is geared up to handle flood-like situation in the district and monitoring the rain situation

Nagpur: Several villages in Nagpur district have been put on high alert due to the possibility of floods following continuous rains for the last 15 days. Water was being released from surrounding dams following incessant rains in the entire district.

Gates of Navegaon Khairy, Nand and Vena dams have been opened to release water which caused floods in Saoner, Parseoni, Umred, Bhiwapur and Ramtek tehsils. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a yellow alert for Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts from July 18 to 20. The people of Nagpur city will not get any respite from continuous rains at least till Friday.

Nagpurians are experiencing this type of constant rain for the first time in recent years. The administration is geared up to handle any kind of flood-like situation in the district and it is monitoring the rain situation. Villages near the Gosikhurd dam, have been asked to remain on alert as the level of backwater is expected to rise in coming days. The administration also appealed to citizens to not venture outside unnecessarily and avoid crossing flooded bridges.

In the last 18 days of July, Nagpur city received rainfall in double digits on 13 occasions. On July 11, the city recorded the highest monsoon rain with 117.2 mm. On July 8, the city recorded 96.4 mm rainfall which was the second highest of the season. Nagpur district received 348.50 mm average rainfall till July 18 and so far it received 632.52 mm rainfall which is 181.50% rains.

In the district, Saoner received the highest 285.17% rains followed by Parseoni (203.05%) and Kuhi (201.92%). In the last 24 hours, Wardha received the highest 244 mm rainfall in Vidarbha followed by Gadchiroli (195 mm). Yavatmal(145mm),Amravati (131 mm), Akola (94.7 mm), Bramhapuri (86.4 mm), Nagpur (73.5 mm), Chandrapur (71.7 mm), Buldhana (46 mm), Washim (44 mm) and Gondia (24.6 mm). Due to heavy rains in triple digit, many villages of Wardha and Gadchiroli are facing flood situation. The rivers and nullahas are flowing at danger mark.
