Nagpur: In a brazen challenge to law enforcement, a history-sheeter allegedly assaulted an on-duty policeman during a night patrol in the Sakkardara police station area, grabbing his collar, slapping him on the ear and hurling filthy abuses before threatening to kill him.
The shocking incident took place late Thursday night when a police team was out patrolling deserted stretches and checking the movements of criminals listed in police records. The accused allegedly picked a fight with the policeman when questioned about his presence at an isolated spot around midnight.
The accused has been identified as Pradeep Thakur, a resident of Sahakar Nagar, who reportedly has a history of involvement in serious criminal offences.
According to police, constable Sandeep Lolusare, attached to the investigation team of Sakkardara police station, was conducting night patrol along with other personnel. During the operation, the team spotted Thakur behind a closed shop in the NIT Complex, opposite Kamla Nehru College.
When Lolusare questioned him about his presence at the deserted location at such a late hour, Thakur allegedly lost his temper. In an aggressive outburst, he caught hold of the policeman’s collar and slapped him on the ear. He then allegedly abused the policeman in public and threatened to kill him.
The assault on a uniformed police personnel not only caused physical humiliation but also obstructed the discharge of official duties. The incident has once again raised concerns over the audacity of habitual offenders and their willingness to directly challenge police authority.
Police sources said Thakur already has a criminal record, with cases involving murder, attempt to murder, assault and other serious offences registered against him.
Following a complaint lodged by constable Sandeep Lolusare, Sakkardara police registered a case against Thakur under relevant sections of law and initiated further investigation.
The incident underscores the risks faced by police personnel while conducting night patrols and enforcing law and order, particularly when dealing with repeat offenders.
