Nagpur: Nearly 48 hours after the chlorine leak at the Godhani water treatment plant, the impact continues to be felt in nearby residential areas, with several homes still locked as families remain away from the affected locality. At the same time, victims undergoing treatment and their families are seeking clarity over who will bear their medical expenses.

The chlorine leak at the 6 MLD water treatment plant being developed by Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran triggered panic in the surrounding Sakar Nagar area and led to the hospitalisation of at least 56 people, including four minors.

Families yet to return home

While residents living farther from the plant have gradually started returning, several houses in the area closest to the facility remain locked. Families living within around 100 metres of the plant are particularly reluctant to return, citing concerns over their safety and the possibility of residual chlorine exposure.

Some residents have chosen to stay with relatives, especially where family members were hospitalised following the leak. Residents have also reported that a chlorine-like smell could still be detected inside some homes.

The incident has left residents demanding clear information about the safety of the treatment plant and the measures being taken to prevent another leak.

Medical expenses add to families’ concerns

For families of those still receiving treatment, the crisis has now extended beyond health concerns. They are seeking a clear assurance on who will pay the hospital bills and how the expenses will be reimbursed.

Residents said some affected families may struggle to meet prolonged medical expenses, particularly if patients require continued observation or treatment.

During a visit to the plant, Nagpur district collector Kumar Ashirwad reportedly assured affected residents that the district administration would bear the treatment expenses. However, families are seeking a formal written assurance and clarity on the process for settling hospital bills.

Safety and accountability questions remain

The chlorine leak has raised serious questions about safety arrangements at the water treatment facility and the preparedness of agencies responsible for its operation.

For residents, the immediate concerns are now twofold – when it will be safe to return home and who will take financial responsibility for the medical treatment of those affected.

With several houses still locked nearly two days after the incident, the administration faces growing pressure to provide residents with clear answers on both safety and medical expenses.
