Mumbai, August 6: In one of his most significant interactions with young Indians in recent years, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat addressed more than 2,000 Gen Z and Gen Alpha students at the India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) Annual Championship Conference in Mumbai on Thursday.
The event, held at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC), brought together students from over 100 cities across India to discuss leadership, democracy and nation-building.
Bhagwat Backs Youth Voices
Delivering a message that is likely to trigger political debate, Bhagwat said today’s younger generation is more honest in expressing its concerns and should not be branded “anti-national” merely for protesting.
He said that when young people raise their voice, it is often because they see a genuine problem that deserves attention rather than dismissal.
“Protest Is Part of Democracy”
Emphasising the importance of democratic values, Bhagwat described protest as a legitimate means of dialogue in a democracy. According to him, disagreement should become a pathway to consensus rather than conflict.
He also urged those in positions of authority to engage with young people through discussion instead of ignoring their concerns.
Acknowledges Shortcomings in the System
In one of the most notable observations during his address, Bhagwat said that whenever a movement or agitation gains momentum, it reflects shortcomings within the system that require correction.
He stressed that the objective of any public movement should be to improve governance and institutions, not merely oppose individuals.
Why the Speech Matters
The interaction comes at a time when student movements and youth-led protests have dominated national headlines over issues such as education, examinations and employment.
Political observers believe Bhagwat’s remarks are significant because they recognise the legitimacy of youth concerns while calling for dialogue instead of confrontation. However, any attempt to interpret the speech as a message directed at the country’s political leadership remains speculative, as Bhagwat himself made no such reference.
His address signals an effort by the RSS to engage directly with India’s youngest generation at a time when Gen Z is emerging as one of the country’s most influential political and social voices.
