Nagpur:
“For me, the post of Mayor is nothing short of a ‘miracle.’ My priority will be resolving women related problems of Orange City. I will try to live up to the responsibility the citizens have bestowed upon me. Fulfilling aspirations of people would be deep in my heart. The new team of Nagpur Municipal Corporation will make efforts to tread the development path shown by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Overall development of Nagpur is not the only goal but also to see the city on the map of the country as a magnificent city,” summed up Nanda Jichkar after taking the charge as the First Citizen of Second Capital City of Nagpur on Monday, March 6.

Addressing a galaxy of dignitaries and citizens present on the occasion, the newly-elected Mayor said that womenfolk were being exploited since the past many years. However, in a big relief to women, reservation for women in representation to NMC was hammered out. As a result, a large number of women got elected as Corporators in the just concluded NMC poll. In many seats, women emerged winners by drubbing male candidates. Many of the women have become Corporators for the first time, Jichkar stated.

“As far as my party making me the Mayor, the message is clear. BJP has shown that the common workers doing outstanding works are bestowed with newer and bigger responsibilities. It is the outcome of different works done transparently by the party that the citizens handed over the keys of power for consecutive third time. People have shown their faith on the party by electing an unprecedented 108 Corporators,” the new Mayor stated.

Earlier, Nanda Jichkar and Deepraj Pardikar took charge as the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively at a glittering ceremony held at lawns of NMC’s Central Office in Civil Lines. Present on the occasion were outgoing Mayor Pravin Datke, Deputy Mayor Satish Holay, Ruling Party Leader Dayashankar Tiwari, Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar, newly-elected Ruling Party Leader Sandeep Joshi, newly elected Chairman of Satnding Committee Sandeep Jadhav, City BJP President and MLA Sudhakar Kohale, MLC Anil Sole, MLAs Sudhakar Deshmukh, Vikas Kumbhare, BSP Group Leader Mohd Jamal, Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Ramnath Sonavane, Chief Engineer Ulhas Debadwar, and other dignitaries.

In his introductory address the outgoing Mayor Datke said that BJP is ruling the civic body since past 10 years. Hailing the welfare tasks done by the party, citizens have given their ‘certificate’ of appreciation by electing 108 Corporators and helped the BJP score a hat-trick of victories. “The ‘baton of relay’ has been handed over to Nanda Jichkar. I am confident that the new team will strive for development of city in the interest of citizens. I am grateful to the NMC administration, Corporator colleagues, and the voters for their cooperation during my tenure,” Datke concluded.

City BJP President Sudhakar Kohale said that the party had vowed to win over 100 seats in NMC poll. “The party workers have strived hard to achieve the target. One more reason can be attributed to the party’s sterling win. The reason is honesty. BJP served the people honestly during its rule. Former Mayor Datke and his team sweated hard to put the city on a leading position in the country,” Kohale said.

The ceremony was conducted by BJP Corporator Divya Ghurde while the vote of thanks was proposed by newly-elected Ruling Party Leader Sandeep Joshi. He also informed that the newly-elected Chairman of Standing Committee Sandeep Jadhav will take his charge in a function to be held at 10 am on March 11 at NMC lawns.
