Former MLA Jadhav gets 1 year jail for slapping Police Inspector in Nagpur

Nagpur: Former MLA Harshvardhan Raibhan Jadhav has been sentenced to one year jail for assaulting a police officer during a political meeting in Nagpur in 2014. The verdict was given by Additional District and Sessions Judge R J Rai.

The incident took place in December 2014, when Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray was holding a meeting with party leaders at Pride Hotel in Nagpur. Harshvardhan Jadhav tried to enter the meeting room, but was stopped by Police Inspector (PI) Parag Jadhav from the Special Security Department. In anger, Jadhav slapped the PI. Following a complaint by PI Jadhav, a case was filed at Sonegaon Police Station under charges of obstructing government work and assault.

The investigation was led by then-API Bhushan Dayama, and a chargesheet was filed in court. During the trial, Harshvardhan Jadhav repeatedly skipped court hearings which led to the issue of arrest warrant. He finally appeared in court on February 17, 2025, and was sent to jail. However, the ex-MLA complained of chest pain and was admitted to Mayo Hospital. After treatment, he was arrested again and later released on bail.

Public Prosecutor Charushila Paunikar successfully proved the case in the court. The court found Jadhav guilty under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code (assaulting a public servant) and sentenced him to 1 year of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000. He was also convicted under Section 332. On failure to pay the fine, he will have to serve an additional 3 months in jail. Head Constables Milind Mude and Madhukar Satpute helped the prosecution during the case.
