Firing in Karnataka over Tipu Sultan anniversary leaves one dead

Madikeri, Karnataka, One person was killed and two others injured in Madikeri town following clash between two groups over celebration of Tipu Sultan anniversary here.

Tension prevailed in the town when two groups took out separate processions but when they reached Thimmiaha circle, they started arguments and clashed with each other.

The groups pelted stones at each other and the police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

A local Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader was killed and over 30 Hindutva supporters injured during clashes between the two groups.

The 50-year-old VHP Kodagu secretary was critically injured in the clash and declared dead on arrival at the local hospital, as per reports.

It may be mentioned here that Tipu Sultan is considered an iconic figure of Karnataka and there are many statues of his dotting the state, specially in the Coorg area, of which Medikeri is the capital.

The Coorgi people are known to be warriors and rever Tipu irrespective of their religion.
