Nagpur: Amid growing concerns over fire hazards during the peak summer season, authorities in Nagpur have stepped up scrutiny of safety measures in crowded commercial establishments, particularly those operating in high-rise buildings.
Ruling party leader Narendra Borkar has directed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Fire Department to obtain a detailed report from the State Excise Department on fire safety systems in marriage halls, restaurants, and bars located in buildings taller than 15 metres. A strict 15-day deadline has been set for submission, signalling urgency around the issue.

The directive was issued during a meeting of the civic body’s Special Committee on Fire and Electricity, chaired by Rupali Thakur, where officials reviewed preparedness for fire emergencies in densely occupied premises.
During the meeting, concerns were raised over compliance gaps in establishments that witness heavy footfall, especially during summer when fire incidents tend to increase. Authorities revisited the mandatory requirement of obtaining a Fire Department No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for facilities such as hospitals, schools, coaching institutes, wedding halls, restaurants, and bars.
Town Planning officials clarified that buildings below 15 metres are exempt from requiring a fire NOC. However, Borkar stressed that high-rise structures must undergo strict verification to ensure they meet all fire safety norms.
Borkar instructed the Fire Department to formally write to licensing authorities, including the State Excise Department, seeking compliance details of operational bars and restaurants. He warned that establishments lacking adequate fire safety systems could face licence cancellation.
At the same time, he cautioned officials against arbitrary action, emphasizing that notices should only be issued after proper on-ground inspection and verification of complaints.
Highlighting the risks in crowded and enclosed spaces, Chairperson Rupali Thakur reiterated that fire safety systems and valid NOCs are non-negotiable for such establishments. She called for fresh inspections to ensure readiness.
Deputy Chairperson Lakhan Yerwar advocated for a comprehensive and coordinated policy involving the Fire Department, Town Planning authorities, and Health Department to strengthen overall safety mechanisms.
Chief Fire Officer Tushar Barahate stated that the department is equipped to respond to emergencies, but officials collectively stressed the need for preventive vigilance, especially during summer months when fire incidents typically see a rise.
