Energy Minister reviews electrification at Elephanta caves

Mumbai: Energy Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule reviewed the electrification work done by MAHADISCOM (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd) on the Elephanta caves (Gharapuri island). For the first in 70 years MAHADISCOM has been successful in reaching electricity. Bawankule was accompained by high officials of Electricity Department. Finally Elephanta caves will now be brightly lit.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis the Maharashtra govt had decided to reach the electricity on the island. Chandrashekhar Bawankule made successful efforts in this direction to reach the electricity on the island. Due to this 950 people have been benefitted on Gharapuri island as there is power supply and this will help in developing the tourism.

The State Government has entrusted the responsibility of developing the Gharapuri island on MMRDA (Mumbai Municipal Region Development Authority) through this agency MAHADISCOM was asked to give the estimated budget for this island.


The Bhandup circle of MAHADISCOM sent the estimated budget of Rs 21 crores for electrification Elephanta caves by laying marine cables right from the bottom of the sea to Gharapuri island, to MMRDA. Out of these Rs 18.5 crores have been sanctioned.

For the electrification work 22 KV, Single Core cable ((3+1additional cable) was laid 7 kms at the bottom of sea. For This the checking was successfully done.
