Nagpur: What began as a routine wait for a train turned into a painful and chaotic ordeal for a 63-year-old passenger at Nagpur Railway Station on Friday evening, after his leg got trapped inside an Indian-style toilet seat in the newly built AC waiting hall.
The bizarre incident triggered panic inside the station premises, forcing railway staff to launch an emergency rescue operation that ultimately required breaking the entire toilet structure to free the injured man.
The passenger has been identified as Kantipudi Venkata (63), a resident of Vijayawada and a practicing lawyer. According to railway officials, he was waiting for his train inside the newly constructed air-conditioned waiting hall on Platform No. 1 when the incident occurred around 4.45 pm.
Officials said the elderly passenger had gone to use the restroom when he reportedly slipped, causing one of his legs to get severely wedged inside the Indian-style toilet seat. Unable to pull himself out and trapped in intense pain, he began shouting for help.
Hearing his cries, railway staff and Passenger Amenities Supervisor Atul Shrivastava rushed to the spot and initiated rescue efforts. However, the situation turned more complicated as the leg remained tightly stuck inside the structure.
With every passing minute, the passenger’s condition worsened and blood reportedly began oozing from the injured leg. Left with no other option, railway employees used tools to break apart the toilet seat and surrounding structure to carefully free him.
After being rescued, the injured passenger was administered first aid before being shifted to Kingsway Hospital, where doctors performed surgery on his leg. Hospital sources said his condition is currently stable.
The unusual incident has now raised concerns over the safety and structural quality of facilities inside the newly developed waiting hall. Railway authorities have reportedly initiated an inquiry into the construction standards and safety aspects of the toilet area to prevent similar accidents in the future.
