Nagpur: In a major crackdown aimed at curbing rising road accidents and ensuring safer roads, the Nagpur Traffic Police have launched a special drive against motorists driving under the influence of narcotic substances. The city police will now use advanced drug-testing machines to identify drivers who have consumed drugs before getting behind the wheel.
The campaign will particularly target weekend parties, pubs, bars, and nightlife hotspots across the city, where police suspect an increase in drug-influenced driving cases.
To execute the operation effectively, the Traffic Department has formed a dedicated enforcement team. Two officers along with police personnel have undergone specialized technical training to operate the newly introduced drug-testing devices.
According to officials, the machines can instantly detect the consumption of substances such as marijuana, opium, heroin, cocaine, and several psychotropic drugs. Drivers found guilty during the checks will face strict legal action under relevant laws.
The Traffic Police have also appealed to citizens to actively cooperate with the campaign. Residents who spot individuals driving under the influence of drugs are urged to report the matter immediately by calling the emergency helpline number 112.
“We request citizens to avoid driving after consuming narcotic substances, keeping in mind their own safety as well as the lives of others on the road,” said Lohit Matani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
