Nagpur: Setting a clear tone for her administration, newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), Dr Manali Kshirsagar, on Wednesday vowed to put students at the centre of every decision. After assuming charge, she told reporters that addressing student concerns on priority would be her foremost commitment.
“Universities exist for students. I will not tolerate students in distress, their issues must be resolved immediately,” she asserted.
Dr Kshirsagar has made history by becoming the first woman Vice Chancellor of the 100-year-old institution. The formal handover was done by Dr Madhavi Khode-Chaware, who herself became the first woman Acting Vice Chancellor, marking a rare moment of dual milestones for the university.
Calling transparency the foundation of credibility, Dr Kshirsagar stressed the need to close existing gaps in university processes. “Students often do not receive timely information because of systemic gaps. With my background in computer technology, I will use technology to strengthen systems and improve quality,” she said.
A new agency has recently taken charge of examination and result processing. The Vice Chancellor said she would examine existing challenges and streamline the system.
3-shift exam plan to save time
Unveiling an important reform initiative, Dr Kshirsagar said the university is planning to conduct examinations in three shifts, from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, to expedite the academic cycle. “This format will allow early conduct of exams and faster declaration of results,” she explained, adding that two-hour papers may be adopted to support the format.
She also addressed concerns over discrepancies in marks between college-conducted and university-conducted exams, stating that academic audits would be used to ensure uniform standards.
Attracting foreign students
Highlighting the absence of international students in recent years, Dr Kshirsagar said the university must introduce area-specific and globally relevant courses. “If we offer programmes aligned with the strengths and needs of particular regions, foreign students will be encouraged to join RTMNU. It is an initial idea and we will work further on it,” she said.
Responding to questions on women’s empowerment, Dr Kshirsagar said her appointment was a proud moment but clarified she would not allow gender to influence governance. “I am happy to be the first woman VC, but I will work without bias. Empowerment is happening everywhere, my aim is to take this university to great heights,” she said.
Registrar Dr Raju Hiwase, Knowledge Resource Centre Director Dr Vijay Khandal, Management Council members, deans, and Senate members were present during the ceremony. After taking charge, Dr Kshirsagar visited Mozari, the workplace of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj.
