Nagpur: As the city reels under a punishing 44°C heatwave, Nagpurians are now battling a second crisis, frequent and erratic power cuts that are turning homes into furnaces and daily life into a struggle for survival.
Despite tall claims by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited and the State Government of “no load shedding,” the ground reality tells a different story. Across several parts of the city, residents are facing repeated outages, many of them sudden and unscheduled, intensifying the misery during peak summer.
Anger is brewing among citizens as the power supply becomes increasingly unreliable just when it is needed the most. Locals allege that beyond the announced maintenance shutdowns, unplanned short-duration cuts are hitting multiple areas without warning, leaving families sweating in the sweltering heat.
Worst-hit localities include Narendra Nagar, Manewada, Dharampeth, Besa, Pratap Nagar, and areas near Kadbi Chowk, where frequent disruptions have crippled routine life. From sleepless nights to water shortages and halted household work, the impact is being felt across all sections of society.
Officials have cited pre-monsoon maintenance work as the reason, claiming efforts are underway to strengthen infrastructure before the rains. But for residents, this explanation offers little relief as the outages continue unabated.
Adding to the woes, a planned power shutdown in Wathoda and adjoining areas on Saturday is set to deepen the crisis. As per MSEDCL, electricity supply will remain suspended from 8 am to 12 noon due to urgent technical work on the 11 kV New Wathoda feeder. Areas including Wathoda Chowk, Subhadra Heights, Jayaram Residency, Anmol Nagar, Orange Nagar, and nearby localities will be affected.
Authorities have advised residents to brace themselves by storing water and charging essential devices, but for many, patience is wearing thin.
With temperatures soaring and power supply faltering, Nagpur is facing a double assault of heat and hardship, exposing glaring gaps between official assurances and the harsh reality on the ground.
