Nagpur: The Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) Praveen Dixit, who is on a visit to Nagpur, said that city police have been directed to take cognizance of increasing incidents of investment frauds and act on their own against the suspicious individuals and companies without waiting for lodging of formal complaints in this connection. The DGP was briefing the media persons after a high-level meeting held at Police Gymkhana here on Saturday.

The DGP, after the meeting, felicitated the team of policemen who investigated the Yug Chandak kidnapping and murder case in painstaking and outstanding manner and the Additional Public Prosecutor Jyoti Wajani who successfully represented the State in District and Sessions Court that ultimately resulted in conviction of two perpetrators of the macabre crime and awarding of unprecedented two death sentences.

“Maharashtra police have launched the citizen-freindly programmes across police stations in the State and the positive results have started to show its effects. A report submitted to the authorities has corroborated the fact,” said the DGP Praveen Dixit and added “Citizens are coming forward in greater proportions in the role of ‘police mitras’ and cooperating with cops over a slew of contentious issues such as maintaining law and order, timely information about crimes, etc. Over 1.50 lakh police mitras have been appointed in the State. Thse police mitras are prodding and inspiring citizens to lodge their complaints without any fear.”

The top cop also heaped accolades on city police for their ‘I Watch’ initiative. “The Mobile App is outstanding. Use of this App should increase manifold. And for this boost, city police should go on awareness spree by crisscrossing schools, colleges, malls, cinema theaters, and places where women visit in large numbers. Citizens must download the App and upload it with photographs, videos about crimes and other illegal acts taking place in their areas. Police should also take notice of citizens’ problems at the earliest and act accordingly,” exhorted the DGP.

The Director General of Police expressed concern over increasing cases of investment frauds and economic crimes in city. He directed the city cops to act on their own against the dubious individuals and companies who plan to dupe citizens of their hard-earned money. There is no need to wait for formal complaints in this regard. Citizens should also keep a close watch on the individuals and companies who float bogus schemes of investment and promise high returns. If citizens find such criminals elements trying to cheat gullible people they should alert police before the fraudsters vanish in the thin airs. Timely action by police as well as citizens might avert duping of more and more people and the money could also be recovered from the tricksters, asserted the DGP Dixit.

“Due to booking of many hardcore criminals under stringent MCOCA provisions in city, the anti-social elements are on the run, but of course, with no escape. The action on the part of city police is laudable. The crackdown will certainly help in controlling crime rate in the Second Capital City of Nagpur,” declared the DGP.

At the same time, help of Muslim community leaders and social activists is being solicited to deradicalize the youths who are getting attracted towards the extremist organization. Awareness drives are also being undertaken by Muslim leaders and social activists to desist the youths from joining the mindless organization, stated the DGP Pravin Dixit.
