Dental Mechanics Assn to move court over ‘illegal’ dental labs

Nagpur: Across Maharashtra, there are thousands of ‘illegal’ dental labs that are run by people who do not have the necessary qualifications. Despite having made complaints to the police, civic authorities and even technical education minister Vinod Tawde, there has been no action on these fake professionals. It is because of this reason that Maharashtra Dental Mechanics Association are considering moving court on the issue.

Dental labs are places where dentures, ceramic caps, implants or other things required in various dental procedures are made. Only a person holding a diploma or degree in dental mechanics and a license number from the state dental council can run such a lab. Anywhere between 3000 to 4000 people in the state are running these labs without having undergone the course or getting licensed from the council.

“When we had spoken to Tawde last year, he assured quick action on fake dental labs. In July, we had even lodged a police complaint. A couple of months after that, the state council sent letters to all the collectors, police authorities and civic officials to take actions against the fake dental mechanics,” said the president of Maharashtra Dental Mechanics Association Sandip Naik from Nashik to media.

Having gone to every authority possible, the association is now considering taking legal recourse in the matter, he added. “Since these fake mechanics charge a much lesser fee, many doctors prefer to get their devices made from them,” said Naik.
