Deadly menace: 701 people perished in road accidents in last 3 years in Nagpur

Nagpur: Road accidents continue to be a deadly menace as between January 2019 and November 2021, a total of 701 people lost their lives in Nagpur city. The 3-year period witnessed a total 653 mishaps in which 585 males and 116 females succumbed to grievous injuries. While Over-Speeding cropped up as the main reason behind the accidents, Drunken Driving/Consumption of Alcohol and Drugs, Driving On Wrong Side, Jumping Red Light, Use of Mobile Phone and Others are the prime causes of the road accidents.

Interestingly, the number of accidents and casualties attributed in 2021 and 2020 are nearly the same as in 2019; despite the two years being riddled with Covid-19 induced lockdowns and restrictions.

In 2021 (till Nov 30), a total of 225 accidents occurred within Nagpur city. In which 238 people died which include 192 males and 46 females. Similarly, in total 195 accidents reported in 2020, 213 people (185 males and 28 females) lost their lives. The year 2019 topped the chart with 233 road accidents and 250 deaths, the victims being 208 males and 42 females.

Notably, a total of 47,984 people died due to road accidents on National Highways (NH), including on expressways, during calendar year 2020, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari informed the Parliament on Thursday.

In total 174 accidents reported on NHs passing through Nagpur in 2020, 65 people were knocked dead, 62 sustained grievous injuries while 38 escaped with minor injuries. Besides, 35 accidents were reported on State Highways and 564 accidents were reported on Other Roads.

Mostly, two-wheelers tend to meet with mishaps, the data shows; followed by pedestrian, four-wheelers, bicycles, truck/lorries, auto rickshaws and lastly bus.

Gadkari has blamed the vehicle design and condition, road engineering, over-speeding, drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug, driving on wrong side, jumping the red light, use of mobile phone, etc as the major causes of accidents on NHs.

“The ministry has issued guidelines for improving the road safety through road safety audits at all stages (design stage, construction stage and O&M stage) by engaging independent road safety experts,” he added.
