Nagpur: Early morning dacoity at the residence of a retired Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) engineer at Ramkrishna Housing Society in Mankapur, along Gorewada Road, by five to six armed hoodlums, created terror on Saturday. Though, the criminals could not loot much, but their violent gestures with iron rods and batons, left the complainant and their neighbours trembling in dread.

Complainant, retired WCL engineer Yerutarabin Kuruvilla Tambi and his wife, live in flat number 4 of Ramkrishna Housing Society, while their two sons live out of town. The couple bolted all the doors of their flat on Friday night before going to bed. At around 2.30 am, Tambi received a phone call from the mobile of a youth working on an under-construction building next door.

The caller hurriedly informed Tambi that some masked-men were trying to break into his house through the rear store-room door.
A terrified Tambi immediately rushed to the rear side of the house where he heard the criminals trying to break in.

Fearing worst, the Tambi couple rushed out of the flat into the front porch, only to face some six masked and armed goons.

The hoodlums attacked the frightened couple and hit Yerutarabin on waist, ribs and hands with rods and batons. Fearing for her husband’s life, Ms Tambi handed over her gold bangles and gold chain of her husband to the goons along with 70,000 cash. Soon after this, the dacoits escaped in the dark of the night towards Gorewada.

Meanwhile, a neighbouring youth contacted Mankapur police station and immediately PSI Bhagat, PSI Atram and their team rushed to the crime scene. Following the directions of the witnesses, the police tried to pursue the dacoits but were too late. Senior officers and dog squad too reached the spot soon afterwards.

Lucky break for dacoits

The youth woke to answer nature’s call on Saturday early morning and saw the gang trying to break into Tambi residence. The gang however failed to break the rear door and were retreating when Tambi couple rushed out to the porch through the front door and got caught.
