Nagpur: Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr. Ravindar Singhal addressed the media today, providing insights into recent police department controversies involving both suspensions and transfers.
The Commissioner elaborated on the recent suspension of four police officers who were seen dancing in their uniforms during an Independence Day celebration. The incident occurred at the Tehsil Police Station, where ASI Sanjay Patankar, Head Constable Abdul Qayyum Ghani, policewoman Bhagyashree Giri, and Constable Nirmala Gawli performed a dance to the Bollywood hit “Khike Paan Banaras Wala” after the flag hoisting ceremony. The performance, recorded and shared on social media, garnered mixed reactions. While some supported the officers’ right to celebrate, others criticized the inappropriateness of their actions in uniform.
In response to questions about the suspension, Dr. Singhal emphasized that maintaining professionalism in uniform is crucial. He stated that while the department values morale and team spirit, such actions must align with professional standards.
Additionally, Dr. Singhal addressed recent controversial transfers within the police department. He clarified that these transfers are carried out after thorough reviews and are sometimes necessary to align officers with roles where they can be most effective. The aim, he said, is to ensure that each officer is positioned in a role that best suits their skills and experience, ultimately enhancing the overall efficiency of the department.
The Commissioner’s remarks come as the department navigates these issues while striving to maintain both public trust and internal discipline.
