Nagpur: Commuters using Ola, Uber, and Rapido may soon see a sharp rise in their travel bills as app-based taxi drivers in Nagpur have decided to enforce the newly revised Regional Transport Office (RTO) fare structure, almost double the rates currently charged on aggregator apps.

Under the revised RTO tariff, passengers will have to shell out Rs 28.80 per kilometre for air-conditioned cabs, compared to the Rs 10–15 per kilometre currently set by the companies. Announcing the decision on Monday, Deepak Sane, President of Vidarbha App-based Taxi Union, said, “We have repeatedly urged the companies to upgrade fares in line with RTO rates, but they have ignored our requests. From now on, we will strictly follow the approved structure.”

Union leaders argue that the low aggregator fares are crippling drivers financially. Vinod Vyavahare, General Secretary, said most of Nagpur’s 4,000–5,000 taxi drivers are struggling to make ends meet. “Many have sold their homes to buy vehicles, but profits have vanished. This is about survival,” he stressed.

Moreshwar Chawre, President of the Joint App-based Taxi Drivers Union, claimed that passengers are already paying the revised fares without resistance. “If someone refuses, drivers cancel the ride,” he said, adding that the union stands firm on the decision.

The dispute has been brewing for months. On July 18, app-based cab drivers across Maharashtra staged a statewide bandh demanding government intervention to fix uniform fares through RTOs. Other demands include scrapping the State Government’s proposed e-bike taxi policy and ending the practice of blocking driver IDs without proper investigation of complaints.

With the new rates now in force, passengers in Nagpur should prepare for costlier rides — while the city’s cab drivers brace for a much-needed financial breather.
