Nagpur: In an effort to strengthen awareness about Nagpur’s water supply network and its challenges, elected representatives of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation undertook a comprehensive study tour of key water treatment facilities on Monday, April 20.

Led by Mayor Neeta Thakre, the delegation, including Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed, ruling party leader Narendra (Balya) Borkar, Opposition leader Sanjay Mahakalkar, and Transport Committee Chairperson Mangala Khekare, visited the Pench Phase-IV Water Treatment Plant at Godhani and the Kanhan Water Treatment Plant.

The visit was organised to give corporators a first-hand understanding of how drinking water is sourced, treated, and supplied to the city, as well as the technical challenges involved in maintaining uninterrupted supply.

Inside the Water Supply System

At the Pench Phase-IV plant, which has a capacity of 115 million litres per day (MLD), corporators inspected critical components such as the SCADA control room, filtration units, treatment systems, chlorination facility, and pumping infrastructure. Officials explained the plant’s functioning, capacity, and operational constraints.

The team later visited the Kanhan Water Treatment Plant, which has a higher capacity of 240 MLD. They also inspected intake wells constructed on the Kanhan River, located about 18 km from the city, from where raw water is drawn using multiple pump houses.

Officials highlighted seasonal challenges, particularly during the monsoon when flooding disrupts pumping operations, and during summer months when water levels in the river drop significantly.

Sources and supply capacity

Nagpur’s water supply primarily depends on two sources, the Kanhan River and the Pench reservoir at Navegaon Khairi in Parseoni tehsil. When water levels in the Kanhan River fall during summer, additional water is released from the Pench reservoir to maintain supply.

The city’s treatment network includes five major plants with a combined capacity of 786 MLD, currently supplying around 735 MLD of treated water. These include facilities at Kanhan, Gorewada (Phases I, II, III), and Godhani (Phase IV).

After treatment, water is distributed to various storage reservoirs across the city and supplied to households through an extensive pipeline network.

Mayor calls for better monitoring

Mayor Neeta Thakre said the study tour was aimed at enabling corporators to better understand the complexities of water supply and communicate ground realities to citizens.

She pointed out recurring issues such as power tripping and flooding in the Kanhan River that often disrupt supply. To improve transparency and efficiency, she directed officials to provide real-time updates on water levels in storage tanks, install flow meters at all tanks, and revive the water supply monitoring system with a centralised dashboard operated by Orange City Water (OCW).

Leaders highlight importance of awareness

Ruling party leader Narendra Borkar said frequent disruptions caused by technical issues and natural factors make it essential for corporators to stay informed and educate citizens accordingly.

Opposition leader Sanjay Mahakalkar termed the visit “highly informative,” expressing hope that better understanding among representatives would help address public concerns and ensure smoother water distribution in the future.

Senior officials, including Superintending Engineer Dr. Shweta Banerjee and Executive Engineer Shrikant Waikar, accompanied the delegation and briefed members throughout the tour.
