Cops raid transport office in Gandhibagh, seize nylon manja worth Rs 2.36 lakh

Nagpur: In a pre-emptive action to curb nylon manja menace, Tehsil police on Tuesday raided Nagpur-Bhopal Transport office in Gandhibagh and seized a stock of the deadly stuff worth Rs 2.36 lakh. There were a total of 336 reels of the banned nylon manja kept for supply to Bhopal in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, a Tehsil Police Station official said, adding that the transport firm owner and one more person were held under Environment Act and IPC provisions.

According to police, an offence under Sections 5, 15 has been registered against the accused Kolba Parasram Chavle, who had booked the goods, and the owner of Nagpur-Bhopal Transport firm Sanjay Avinashchandra Kapoor. The action was initiated under the guidance of DCP Zone 3 Gajanan Rajmane by Tehsil Senior PI Jayesh Bhandarkar.

Tehsil police had received a tip-off that a truck (HR-55/S 3207) was transporting nylon manja and coming to Nagpur-Bhopal Transport office in Gandhibagh. Acting on the information, a team of police reached the transport office and waited for the truck which arrived around 4 pm on Tuesday. Soon, the cops detained the truck driver and checked the papers. The papers revealed that the thread was booked for transport. When cops grilled the Manager of transport office Hasanbhai, he informed them that the goods were booked by the accused Kolba Chavle.

With Makar Sankranti a month away, markets have started buzzing with all kinds of colourful kites. And the clandestine business of manufacture and sale of nylon manja, glass coated manja reaching its peak despite a nationwide ban on the very dangerous stuff.

It is pertinent to recall that sale of nylon and glass coated manja has been banned nationwide by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The NGT had imposed a blanket ban on nylon and glass coated manja due to the threat it posed to humans, birds, and animals. But still the rampant sale and use of the banned manja continues.
