Keeping in mind the flooding water sources wreak havoc in low-lying areas during monsoon, the Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday directed all the concerned Government and semi-government officials to undertake cleaning, deepening and widening of three main rivers, nallahs in Nagpur as well as 234 flood-prone villages of district before June 5.

Bawankule was reviewing the Disaster Management System in a meeting held at Bachat Bhavan Hall of Collectorate here on Saturday. The meeting was attended by Mayor Pravin Datke, MLAs Sudhakar Deshmukh, Sudhakar Kohale, Ashish Deshmukh, Sudhir Parve, Sameer Meghe, Mallikarjun Reddy, MLC Anil Sole, Standing Committee Chairman Sudhir Raut, Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar, District Collector Sachin Kurve, ZP CEO Kadambari Bhagat, WCL CMD Rajivranjan Mishra and other officials.

The work on cleaning up of city’s Nag River, Pili Nadi and Pora River is in progress. The formal full-fledged drive to clean up the rivers will be launched on Monday (May 9). Different machines of Nagpur Municipal Corporation will be deployed for the task of cleaning of nallahs. The three rivers will be cleaned, deepened and widened up to 10 kilometers.

MLA Sudhakar Deshmukh suggested that priority should be accorded to remove encroachments along the banks otherwise the flooding water gushes into the localities in low-lying areas. MLA Sudhakar Kohale put up the problems being faced by citizens of Jambudeep Nagar. The Guardian Minister directed the Zilla Parishad officials to undertake cleaning up of nallahs in rural areas such as Yerkheda-Ranala, Gonhisim-Bahadura-Kharbi, Pardi-Bidgaon-Tarodi, Ramnamaroti-Kharbi-Vihirgaon and other such areas. The cleaning works will be taken taken up in stretches on the city’s outskirts and rural areas. Two Poclain machines have been engaged, one in Pili and other in Pora river. Cleaning work of Pili river from Kamptee road to outskirts of city beyond Bharatwada, where Nag and Pili river meet. Similarly, cleaning of Pora river from Hudkeshwar to Vihirgaon and beyond, covering Narsala, Besa, Beltarodi etc.

NMC has now plans to engage 26 Poclanes, 29 JCBs and 70 tippers for desilting followed by transportation of the silt and garbage. NMC has identified spots adjacent to the rivers and also outside for dumping the silt removed from the rivers.
