Nagpur: Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi said: “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” Taking these inspirational words as mantra for cleanliness and to be part of a five-year “Swachh Bharat” Mission (“Clean India” Campaign) launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Gandhi Jayanti, the Nagpur Division of Central Railway started the cleanliness campaign. The Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) O P Singh administered the “Swachh Bharat” pledge to officials and employees at a function held at its premises. The pledge is: “Mahatma Gandhi dreamt of an India which was not only free but also clean and developed. Mahatma Gandhi secured freedom for Mother India. Now it is our duty to serve Mother India by keeping the country neat and clean. I take this pledge that I will remain committed towards cleanliness and devote time for this. I will devote 100 hours per year, that is two hours per week, to voluntarily work for cleanliness. I will neither litter not let others litter. I will initiate the quest for cleanliness with myself, my family, my locality, my village and my work place. I believe that the countries of the world that appear clean are so because their citizens don’t indulge in littering nor do they allow it to happen. With this firm belief, I will propagate the message of Swachh Bharat Mission in villages and towns. I will encourage 100 other persons to take this pledge which I am taking today. I will endeavour to make them devote their 100 hours for cleanliness. I am confident that every step I take towards cleanliness will help in making my country clean.”
After the pledge administration, members of Central Railway Cultural Academy and Bharat Scouts and Guides organized street plays depicting importance of cleanliness. A rally was also taken out and the members went to Platform No. 1 of Nagpur Railway Station and spread the message of “Clean India’ campaign among passengers. A photo exhibition based on cleanliness significance was also put up at the Platform No. 1 as part of the campaign. The exhibition was inaugurated by DRM O P Singh.
The DRM Singh and Additional DRM Dr Jaideep Gupta themselves wielded the brooms and cleaned the Narrow Gauge Platform of Nagpur Railway Station. Both Singh and Dr Gupta later went to Ajni Colony and cleaned the area and planted tree saplings as well. The “Swachh Bharat” Mission pledge was also administered at Nagpur Division’s Baitul, Amla, Wardha, Sewagram, Chandrapur, Ballarshah Stations/Depots and colonies which received overwhelming response.
The “Swachh Bharat” campaign will culminate on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019.
Similarly, the Nagpur Division of Central Railway paid tributes to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary today. DRM O P Singh garlanded the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi in his office and paid his tributes to Father of the Nation.
